Having your wedding all in the one venue really does have its advantages, as couple Debbie and Jonathan found out when they had their amazing wedding day, ceremony and reception, at Dalhousie Castle in Bonnyrigg. “I stayed the night before with my mum and it was nice waking up and chilling out in the castle before getting ready for the wedding,” says bride Debbie.
The couple opted for this stunning venue after visiting and being blown away by every single aspect of it. “It was beautiful but we felt relaxed there, not formal and stuffy. You drive up a long driveway before you reach it, which adds to the magic and grandeur of it all.” The ceremony room is a chapel flooded with natural light and for the reception, well, what else would do in a venue like this but two thrones for the bride and groom!
“There were chandeliers, and shields and swords hang on the wall in the ceilidh room “ what more could you want from a venue?” she asks.
The day was an intimate affair with just 55 guests, all of whom were close family and friends and some had travelled from Spain and Australia. “We had a humanist ceremony, conducted by Fiona Flanagan,” Debbie tells us, “who was so kind and caring, and delivered such a personal ceremony.” It was even more personal when Jonathan’s sister read out a poem she’d written during the ceremony called ˜My Big Brother’. “It was so heartfelt and touching,” says Debbie.
Debbie’s bridesmaids also somehow managed to acquire her grandfather’s handkerchief, and gifted it to her as her Something Blue for the day. “He passed away a while ago, and I didn’t even know any family members still had it,” she smiles. “It was so thoughtful. I wrapped it around my bouquet for the ceremony.”
After an emotional service, guests enjoyed some fizz while the couple went off with Gerlof Greisel of GEEBZ Photography to get some pictures taken. “He was a consummate professional on the day and helped us to relax,” says Debbie of Gerlof, “and he made everything really fun!” Debbie and Jonathan are both into their martial arts, so they decided to get some fun pics with their martial arts friends after dinner.
“In the evening, we had another 45 guests arriving for the ceilidh,” says Debbie. Performed by Heeliegoleerie, the pair’s pals got right into the spirit of the Scottish dancing. When they were taking a break from that, they jumped in the photo booth to get some really fun souvenir snaps. “One tip I would give brides is to have a spare dress that is suitable for dancing in the evening to change into,” she says, “because you don’t want to miss out on the fun!”
