The Black Watch Castle

Perthshire locals will probably be familiar with The Black Watch Castle and Museum – it’s a postcard-perfect castle complete with turrets which are hard to miss!

But even if you’ve seen it before, you might not have realised that you can actually get married at this historic and picturesque Scottish landmark.

Whether you’re a local or not, here are the basics you need to know to really understand how special this wedding venue is.

The Black Watch Castle

Then and now

The building itself, Balhousie Castle, dates back to the 12th century, and is the ancestral home of Scotland’s oldest Highland Regiment, The Black Watch. It’s in a lovely spot in the heart of Perth, just on the edge of the North Inch park and a five minute walk from the River Tay.

Today, it runs as a multi-award-winning museum, café and exclusive wedding and events venue.

Following recent renovations, Balhousie Castle now offers a unique opportunity to hire a wedding venue with the best of both worlds: plenty of history and atmosphere, as well as a contemporary event space.

The Queen Mother Room, which opened in April 2018, is a beautiful space for a wedding, mostly thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows which flood the room with daylight. You’ll be able to seat up to 80 guests here for your wedding breakfast, with room for around 100 for your evening reception.

Bespoke weddings

But it’s not the only event space on offer at Balhousie Castle – there are several options to suit parties of different sizes and different budgets.

If you’re planning an intimate wedding celebration with just your nearest and dearest, for example, then you might want to take a look at The Wavell Room. It’s a distinctive space named in memory of Field Marshal Sir Archibald Wavell, The Black Watch’s highest ranking officer.

You could also choose to have your meal in the Empire Gallery that actually used to be the castle’s family drawing room, so your small party of 12 can sit down for an exclusive dining experience whilst enjoying all the fancy of Downton Abbey.

If you really want to take advantage of this unique venue’s history and create a wow factor, speak to their team about using the regimental silver as centrepieces for your tables!

There’s also a courtyard space and grounds perfect for an outdoor ceremony. With plenty of room for a marquee, the castle also provides a stunning background for your wedding photographs.

No matter which unique space you get married in at Balhousie Castle, thanks to a strict ‘one wedding a month’ policy, you won’t have to share your special day with anyone else. It’s all part of their focus on delivering a world class service and bespoke celebrations.
