We headed to The Trades Hall of Glasgow, a historic venue in the Merchant City, to find out more about getting married here…

It’s a beautifully warm and sunny day when I arrive in the centre of Glasgow, which means, of course, that everywhere is packed and I’m feeling just a little claustrophobic after being stuck on a hot train.

But it’s just a five-minute walk from Queen Street station to The Trades Hall of Glasgow, and as soon as I walk through the grand doors of this historic building, the refreshingly cool air and welcoming wood panelling blocks out all the noise and chaos of the city centre.

I’ve only just set foot inside and that’s already one major tick for being conveniently located while also maintaining a feeling of seclusion and privacy – ideal for weddings.

Atmospheric spaces

Friendly wedding manager Laura meets me in the entrance to take me on a tour of the building, which dates back to the 1790s and still boasts original features! It’s home to The Trades House of Glasgow, and all income raised from events is used to support their charitable work.

During the tour, Laura points out the beautifully ornate tiling and ceilings, and all the places where there’s scope for Pinterest friendly wedding décor to be added. Take the central staircase, for example, which you’re allowed to decorate with flower garlands, lanterns and fairylights to create a romantic welcoming space for your guests (it’s also an ideal spot for couple shots!). Trades Hall can even take care of all of this for you.

The most impressive space is The Grand Hall where you can hold your ceremony, a wedding breakfast for up to 190 guests and an evening reception for 250. Its intricate ceiling with baroque chandeliers packs a serious wow factor, plus arched windows flood the room with natural daylight.

Tailor-made plans

There’s a variety of other rooms to suit weddings of different sizes, including the Saloon featuring a grand piano and marble fireplace, and the Robert Adam Room which is ideal for drinks receptions. As Trades Hall only ever hosts one wedding a day, you can use them all as you wish.

The excellent catering is provided by the renowned kitchen at The Corinthian Club, and there are lots of other optional extras included with the venue hire, from table linen and red carpets to a dressing room with en-suite facilities for the newlyweds to use during the wedding! You can bring in your own suppliers if you want to, though. Reduced parking and special accommodation rates at nearby hotels are also available.

With a friendly team as welcoming as the building itself, and lots of flexibility in how to use this atmospheric and grand place, you’ll have no problem planning your perfect wedding here!
