SWD visits: Crossbasket Castle, Blantyre [Review]

Crossbasket Castle has been causing quite a stir since it opened last year. Editor Natasha Radmehr visits the five-star castle to find out what all the fuss is about…

Glasgow has no shortage of amazing wedding venues, but compared to other parts of Scotland, it’s always been kind of lacking in the luxurious castle department. That all changed recently, however, when five-star Crossbasket Castle opened its doors to the public.

Ok, so it’s not quite in Glasgow “ it’s actually in High Blantyre “ but being a mere 20-minute drive from the city, it’s a cinch to get to. And with a scenic setting overlooking the stunning waterfalls on the River Calder, you couldn’t ask for a more peaceful (not to mention picturesque) location in which to celebrate your day.

Everything about this venue is refined and polished; it might date to the 16th century, but £9 million was spent on renovations and it definitely shows. I find myself wandering awestruck from room to room, admiring the antique chandeliers, ornate period furnishings and historical paintings.

The food is outstanding, too. Legendary French chefs Albert Roux and Michel Roux Junior oversee the restaurant, so you can expect a meal your guests will be talking about for a long time. I try the chef’s tasting menu “ which includes the likes of roe buck deer tartare, Loch Fyne oyster terrine and Borders lamb with onion and cider boulang¨re potatoes “ and think of nothing else for days afterwards.

And the piece de resistance? The honeymoon suite, or should I say bridal tower, which is set across four floors (yup, four!) and contains a bridal dressing area, four-poster bed, bathroom with walk-in shower and roll top bath, and lounge area. Swoon.

Just dozing in the plush armchair IN THE BATHROOM of the honeymoon suite. #luxuryliving

You can hire the castle on an exclusive-use basis and there are nine bedrooms for your nearest and dearest to stay over. If your wedding is on the small side, though, you don’t have to hire the whole castle exclusively; parties of up to 12 can celebrate in the Lindsay Tower Suite.

On a budget? Venue hire is discounted between Sunday-Thursday.
