Running away to elope in Scotland after less than a year together sounds like a story from the pages of a wildly romantic novel, but Emily, 18, and Kal, 20, always knew their whirlwind romance was true love – so why wait?
“We met on a night out with mutual friends,” says Emily. “We both caught each other’s eye straight away and stayed together for the whole evening. At the end of the night we exchanged numbers and we’ve been together ever since. I think we both knew we’d met our soulmate that night.”
When the couple decided to get married after only nine months of dating, they didn’t want to waste time on carefully curated table plans or flower arrangements; they just wanted to focus on their love for each other on their special day. And so they set about planning their perfect Scottish elopement.
“We liked the fact that we could plan everything completely for ourselves and seize the day as our own,” smiles Emily.
The couple kept it so under wraps that they only pulled two witnesses for the ceremony off the streets of Edinburgh an hour before the wedding! “We found a lovely young man and woman who were visiting Edinburgh from Liverpool who kindly agreed to be part of our big day,” laughs Emily.
When it came time for the couple to exchange vows, both were so overcome with love for each other that they found it difficult to get the words out. “The ceremony was very emotional and as we were reciting our vows to each other we could both see tears welling up in the other’s eyes,” says groom Kal. “We lost track of our words because we were so caught up in the moment.”
No Scottish elopement would be complete without a romantic photo session to make the most of Scotland’s stunning scenery, so after the ceremony the couple headed to Arthur’s Seat with Justina to get some pictures taken, happy in the knowledge that they had definitely made the right decision about their big day.
“Having a secret elopement was really romantic and the best decision for our wedding,” says Emily. “There were no distractions on our wedding day and we could focus on each other completely. We will never forget how amazing that felt!”
