Having the run of a Scottish castle for a whole weekend made Heather and David’s wedding a truly magical experience, captured beautifully by Vivvi Photography.
An intimate interfaith ceremony and lunch for 30 of their nearest and dearest followed by a mouth-watering dinner and dancing in the marquee for 170 made their big day one to remember.
Bride Heather tells us all about it in her own words…
Fenton Tower is on a hill with fabulous views of the East Lothian countryside. You can see where I grew up. We had a marquee with clear sides to make the most of the views of the Bass Rock and the Lammermuir Hills.
We wanted a small ceremony followed by a large party. Fenton Tower provided a stunning setting for an intimate ceremony and lunch as well as a huge space for a bespoke marquee for 170 people.
The venue was more than just a five-star venue. It offered us the flexibility we required. You can hire the whole castle and a purpose-built site for a marquee next to the castle. The interior of the castle is traditional Scottish with the grandeur of a castle but the cosiness of your home. We particularly enjoyed the Penhaligon’s toiletries and the bottles of whisky and gin in each room.
The manager, Alan Thomson, is exceptional. He ensured everything ran smoothly over the weekend without us needing to worry about a thing. If anything went wrong, we didn’t know! He made us feel that the Tower was our incredible home for our wedding weekend. The chefs from Feast were fantastic. They make whatever you request. We had a homely supper the night before the wedding night and then a formal meal after the ceremony.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
I got my dress from Bliss, a second-hand boutique in Edinburgh. I tried other places but I know a few people who got absolutely stunning designer dresses there that looked as good as new and were a fraction of the price. I took my two best friends. I really liked my dress because I wanted one that was comfy to wear and that would flow out when I twirled.
SMALL AND INTIMATE
We wanted our wedding ceremony to be quite small. We chose interfaith minister Morag Cameron.
We got married at Easter and really struggled to get any Church of Scotland ministers who were not caught up with Easter so we went for Morag.
It worked out really well. She was really friendly and easy-going and the ceremony was exactly what we wanted. It was very personal, intimate and relaxed.
We got married in the Great Hall at Fenton Tower. They set it up to look like a church.
We then had an exquisite lunch prepared by Feast for 30 people. For starter we had a choice of seared carpaccio of venison or carrot and coriander soup followed by a main of halibut with mussel and saffron sauce or Moroccan lamb tagine and then dessert was salted caramel cheesecake.
LET THEM EAT CAKE
We designed our cake from Liggy’s ourselves. It was very simple. A lot of people call me “H” so we made a D&H lemon sponge cake with roses and the “and” was red velvet.
TIME TO PARTY
From 3.30pm we moved to the marquee with 170 guests and Craig Wood did the catering for dinner. He was great fun to work with and very patient with all my questions. He even played the bagpipes for us!
We used Callanish for our entertainment and added a saxophone for a twist. We tailored songs to the sax and allowed them to really go for it!
Our first dance was an Orcadian Strip the Willow so that we didn’t have to improvise and so that everyone was up dancing straight away.
We are glad that we cut costs with flowers and the dress so that we could invite all our friends and family. We were completely overwhelmed by their support and best wishes for our marriage. It was truly wonderful and we can’t thank them enough.
