Scotland’s leading Highlandwear suppliers MacGregor and MacDuff enjoyed their busiest year yet in 2017, and are looking forward to an even busier 2018 as a new group of soon to-be-wed guys begin their search for the perfect wedding day outfit.
We caught up with retail manager at MacGregor and MacDuff, Sarah Ferguson, as she prepares for the year ahead and talks us through the grooms’ journey from selecting a tartan to timescales.
YOUR PERFECT FIT
“We always suggest that grooms and their groomsmen book the initial fitting with us 12 weeks in advance of the wedding date, at a minimum,” explains Sarah. “This means that we have plenty of time to make sure the hire stock is available in the right sizes for the whole party and also, any made-to-measure elements have time to be manufactured. We have really high standards for our outfits, and that all takes time!”
Sarah’s seeing a real rise in the number of grooms who are opting to buy their kilt outfit rather than hire it, meaning that the outfit can be kept and worn again at future special occasions, and serve as a reminder of that amazing day.
“We know how important it is for the groom to feel and look his best on his wedding day and, with decades of experience and a reputation for outstanding craftsmanship and exceptional customer service, our in-store kilt specialists help make sure you find the perfect outfit to suit your personal style,” says Sarah.
Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to begin though; the team at MacGregor and MacDuff are experts and know exactly how to guide you through the experience making it an enjoyable one for you and your groomsmen.
“In my experience, the first thing that guys ask is “How do I choose the right tartan?”. That’s a great question! There are so many things you should consider: the colour scheme of your wedding, your venue style, your family or clan tartan, whether you want to go modern or more traditional… the list is endless! Luckily, we’re here to help you narrow it all down,” she says.
Do you have a gaggle of groomsmen? Not a problem for MacGregor and MacDuff. They’re experienced in dealing with large groups and will help to coordinate everyone with measurements and fittings.
“We’ve organised outfits for wedding parties all over the country, some with as many as 20 people, and nothing is too much to ask!” says Sarah.
BANG ON TREND
When it comes to trends, Sarah harks back to the popular Exclusive Tartans range from 2017, which proved a hit with customers.
“We designed four special tartans, each of which can be paired with tweed jackets, and they’ve been so popular with wedding parties. I can see that carrying on into 2018,” Sarah tells us.

Sarah predicts that 2018 grooms will love the Arran Mist tartan (pictured above), one of the front runners in 2017; a timeless navy colour which looks sophisticated but contemporary. “I’m also seeing a real lean towards neutral, earthy colours too, so look out for that,” she adds.
Adding to their already extensive tartan collections, MacGregor and MacDuff have also launched a new Heritage Collection, including all the matching clan crest accessories for the groom. “It’s a real celebration of their Scottish family history; the ideal sentiment for a wedding outfit!” says Sarah.
Extremely proud of their heritage, MacGregor and MacDuff take pride in sourcing the finest suppliers Scotland has to offer and in addition to their Highlandwear, they also stock a wide range of luxury Scottish heritage accessories and products.

Sarah and the team at MacGregor and MacDuff know how important sticking to a wedding budget is, so to lighten the load, they have a range of wedding party special offers available whether you’re hiring or buying from them.
“Many grooms take advantage of our Buy and Save offer, which allows grooms who are buying their outfit to get two hire outfits free of charge,” explains Sarah.
If you do decide to purchase your bespoke kilt outfit, then you can take advantage of the interest free credit offer and pay as little as £25 a month, allowing you to spread the cost throughout the year. “We found that lots of bridal boutiques offered this kind of flexibility to brides and we thought that grooms deserved that too! It just takes the pressure off and makes it as easy as possible for grooms to actually buy their own outfits rather than hiring,” says Sarah.
If you do decide to hire however, don’t worry: you’ve not been forgotten about! The Wedding Party Hire offer is an option for you. Grooms will get one free hire for every five hires booked! “This works particularly well if you have quite a few members of your wedding party who need a kilt,” Sarah explains.
With so many different tartans, bespoke options, expert advice and special discounts on offer at MacGregor and MacDuff, it really is a no-brainer to visit them for your once-in-a-lifetime wedding day outfit.
