Even those of us who were firmly Team Aidan can agree that when Big proposed to Carrie on Sex and the City, he nailed it by giving his shoe-loving bride-to-be a pair of Manolo Blahniks instead of a ring.
And the Hangisi pumps, made from royal blue satin and embellished with an elaborate jewel buckle, became the perfect something blue when Carrie married Big at their New York courthouse wedding.
Though the show didn’t spark a worldwide trend for shoe proposals, the Hangisi became one of Blahnik’s most iconic and best-selling designs, worn by countless celebs and brides who wanted to emulate Carrie at their own weddings (fun fact: Olivia Palermo walked down the aisle in a pair of Hangisis when she married Johannes Huebl back in 2014).
You’ll have noticed that a lot of bridal boutiques stock Rainbow Club shoes, and that’s because they’re comfortable, come in a wide variety of styles, and they won’t break the bank. Each pair has a blue crystal hidden in the sole (a cute touch), and most of the shoes are dyeable and can be further customised with a range of shoe clips and accessories.
To get a pair of shoes that look similar to Hangisi, the first thing you need is Rainbow Club’s ‘Vivian’, pictured below. These ivory satin court shoes cost £75 and have a sleek pointed toe, padded lining and a 9cm heel.
Next, make use of Rainbow Club’s colour customisation service. You can either do this through one of their retailers, or you can order online (there’s a step-by-step guide that explains how to do it).
Though there used to be an extra cost to have your shoes dyed, Rainbow Club will now hand-colour any of their dyeable shoes for free. All you need to do is send a colour swatch and they’ll match it – in this case, you’d want to go for royal blue.
Finally, finish off the look with a touch of sparkle. These Xenia brooch shoe clips cost £43 for a pair, and can be placed anywhere on your shoes: pop them on the front for a Manolo-inspired look, or stick them at the back if you’d like a bit of glitz above the heel.
Et voila – a designer look for less!
