“We didn’t have a theme for our wedding but we did have two aims: for our guest’s first reaction to be ˜wow!’ and for their last thought to be what an amazing time they’d had,” smiles bride Michelle.
As a seasoned wearer of all things black Michelle wanted to surprise people with a brighter colour scheme but it was the gorgeous tartan that was eventually chosen for the groomsmen that determined the colours after all.
“When we started looking at the Fraser tartan colours it became clear that it would be black after all,” she laughs. “The boys looked so great in their kilts with black shirts and jackets and it allowed me to match them in with the bridal party.”
The couple chose Happy Talk to style the amazing ballroom at Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel. “One idea that they had was to drape off part of the room so that it had that same sense of space that we loved, but made it just that little bit more intimate,” says Michelle. “Even the hotel staff commented on how it had never been done before but how it really worked.”
The couple chose the iconic Grand Central Hotel, which is just inside Central Station, because of their love for the city. “John and I are both from Glasgow and we love the city,” Michelle tells us.
“There was never a question of it being anywhere else.” Michelle and John loved the modern luxurious interiors at the hotel, and also wanted a larger venue so that guests didn’t feel crammed in. “It was nice to have space so that guests could mingle,” says Michelle.
The couple’s humanist celebrant Paul spent time with them going over vows for the ceremony, and Michelle cites it as one of the most special moments of the day. “He asked us to talk about five things we loved about each other, but we only told him and not each other. It was so special and emotional to hear those for the first time on the day.”
John’s best man Alex’s speech had all the elements of a great best man’s speech, particularly that section that makes the bride and groom fidget a little in their seats!
“Fortunately for us, this only involved a surprise card until the guest tables showing some very cringe worthy photos of John and I over the years,” says Michelle, “this made everyone laugh, including John and I.”
After 18 years together, Michelle and John say that they didn’t expect to feel any different after the wedding but to their surprise, they do.
“It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what’s changed but being married has brought a new dimension to our relationship,” says Michelle. “It brings a smile to my face referring to my husband rather than my partner.”
