Dress Stories is all about a bride’s relationship with her special wedding outfit, from searching for it to finding it, and how it made her feel on the day.
Jan’s wedding weekend in a bespoke marquee was simply the last word in elegant glamour and demanded not one but two amazing outfits. Her hunt took her to London and all over Scotland before finding The Ones.
How did you feel about dress shopping?
I was not sure what style of dress I wanted.
I did know I did not want strapless, and I love my back so I knew I wanted something fitted and backless.
I have always been drawn to lace and after many hours on Instagram I was continually returning to Berta due to the sheer style and sophistication of the designs.
Another designer which influenced my choice was Galia Lahav.
How was your shopping experience and who went with you?
My sister-in-law and I flew to London to Browns and had a two-hour session where I tried on many dresses.
One specifically caught my eye and we added on an overskirt to change the look. With this in mind I had the look I was aiming for.
A few months later my bridesmaids and I went dress shopping around Scotland, we made a weekend of it.
We found my dress and with a few tweaks and additions we created the dress for day one.
What was your dress like and why did you choose it?
The dress was by Martina Liana.
It originally had thin straps descending down the back into lace.
However, as it was backless I felt it was more elegant with capped sleeves.
It took a few months later to finally find the simple cathedral veil supplied by my dress maker to finish the dress off.
For my dress for day two I went straight to Perfect Bridal Rooms in Aberdeen.
Alison Waller is a personal friend and I had found a Suzanne Neville dress I wanted for the Sunday. It was off the shoulder, long sleeved and fitted with a single front split.
My experience with Perfect Bridal and Suzanne Neville custom design was exactly what every bride wants. Perfection.
How did you accessorise your dress?
I purchased a pearl and diamond hair piece from Avorio Bridal in Fochabers, Aberdeenshire.
I wore my old Jimmy Choo platform heels as my something old, my dress was new along with a YSL dusky pink clutch from my bridesmaid, my mother-in-law lent me her mother of pearl, sapphire and diamond drop earrings following the tradition of something borrowed something blue.
I accessorised [my dress for day two] with earrings from Perfect, Jimmy Choo heels and matching bag.
