Natalie Mackenzie Makeup Artist and Hairstylist launched an exciting new beauty salon this year and it’s the perfect place to get your bridal glam sorted!
We spoke to Natalie to find out more Studio Jayne, opened in collaboration with Laura Sutherland Makeup, and what’s on offer…
Q: Let’s start at the beginning! How did you first get into bridal hair and makeup?
I started my business at the end of 2014 after struggling to juggle my full time job with being a mum to my two little boys. I decided to train at Sara Hill’s Academy of Makeup and I’ve never looked back.
I knew instantly that it was bridal makeup that I wanted to get into, making brides feel their absolute best on their special day.
To this day I love seeing my brides wedding pictures and it’s something I request on my feedback – it honestly makes my heart burst!
It just doesn’t get old, no matter how many bridal parties I’ve worked with. To have been a small part of it is such an honour.
Q: What can you tell us about Studio Jayne?
The idea for it came when Laura and I were speaking about our visions for the future and we realised that a lot of our ideas were aligned with each other.
We have been open since July of 2018 and it really is a delight having our own space for bridal trials and beauty appointments, which is set up and lit to the standard that allows us to produce our best work.
The studio is a one stop beauty shop, offering nail, waxing, brow and skin treatments alongside hair styling and makeup. We have packages available for our brides to get them ready from top to toe before their wedding day.
Both Laura and I are passionate about skincare and as this is an integral part of bridal preparation, we are delighted to be able to offer skin consultations and treatments to ensure brides have the best skin possible for their big day.
The benefit of well looked after skin can’t be underestimated for that beautiful bridal makeup finish.
Q: How do you feel about the launch of your new studio?
Really excited! I’m glad to have made the leap of faith with it.
We have so many plans for the future, so watch this space! We have a makeup range coming in within the next few weeks and lots more offers, treatments and services to add to what we are already doing.
It can be slightly overwhelming at times, there aren’t many days off and time for myself is non-existent, but I’m certain all the hard work will pay off.
And it’s great to have Laura as my business partner, we work really well together and we always have each other for support (and prosecco!).
Q: Do you have a signature makeup style or look?
I would like to think that I can cater for everyone, regardless of the style that they want.
Whether someone wants a soft and subtle look or fuller, more ‘instaglam’ style makeup, I’m happy and confident in creating either.
Q: What is your biggest source of inspiration?
I get inspiration from so many different sources. Social media is great for inspiration; I love following other makeup artists and seeing their work.
From artists I know and work with, to well known names in the business, it’s fascinating seeing what others are creating.
I follow most of the big brands but I also love discovering up-and-coming brands as well. Seeing new product launches and how people are using them on platforms like Instagram is always interesting.
But my biggest inspiration for my work is my clients. Creating a look from their brief that they ultimately love is the best reward.
Q: How do you work with brides?
My working style is ultimately about making my clients feel comfortable with me, so they feel they can freely communicate with me regarding the service I’m providing.
My service can be split into two parts when working with brides. Trials are a great opportunity to really explore and refine the final look.
I’m initially client led when it comes to their vision for their day regarding hair and makeup, with advice and ideas provided laterally by me based on this, so in the first instance I speak to them about what they feel like they would like, asking for pictures and ideas for inspiration.
From there I tailor the look we create to their individual preferences. It’s a very dynamic process between the client and I, with advice from me and feedback from the client throughout the trial.
On the day, my role is obviously to recreate the look but also to provide a luxurious and relaxed experience when clients are sat in my chair.
I’m part of an intimate moment in time with the bride, her family and closest friends. I’m always mindful and respectful of this, and it’s something I always feel is a privilege. I would like to think my working style reflects this.
My goal is always to have my brides feeling like the best version of them and to feel their most beautiful, regardless of the style of makeup they prefer.
A lot of the feedback I receive mentions how comfortable I make people feel, which is something that always makes me proud!
