Each week, we answer the wedding questions you’re too afraid to ask¦
Q. My parents are pressuring me to invite people I don’t want at my wedding. How do I tell them to back off?
This tradition stems from the old days when the bride’s family hosted the wedding and controlled the guest list. If your parents are not paying towards the day, you have grounds to tell them (gently, calmly and with perfect diplomacy) thanks, but no thanks.
But if they’re helping to foot the bill, you might have to concede a little. It can be easy to underestimate the generosity of loans from the bank of mum and dad when wedding suppliers’ prices are so high, but a couple of thousand pounds is a lot of money and you have to thank them somehow!
