When we ask bride Joanne what her advice for planning your wedding is, she doesn’t hesitate. “Simply put, don’t stress,” says Joanne, “because you never know what might happen on the day. As long as you marry the person you love, what else matters?”
This rings true with Joanne more than most as, on the morning of her wedding, her beloved dad had a stroke. Although they went ahead with the wedding, it was a bittersweet day for Joanne and husband Fraser.
“My wedding was the best day of my life, but also the worst day,” reflects Joanne. Thankfully, after open-heart surgery, Joanne’s dad was able to attend her second wedding reception in January this year and is now on the road to recovery.
Joanne says that photographer Hayley Fraser was so understanding under tough circumstances, something which she says helped her get through the morning.
“I was a blubbing mess the whole day and the pictures caught the sad moments, but also the happy ones to share with my dad,” she says. “Her husband Craig came along to help too, and he kept us laughing through the day.”
Not only were Joanne and Fraser grateful for the services of their photographers but they were delighted with Brian Scott’s film-making skills too, as he captured the day for them.
“He included family pictures from around the house into the video, which was a lovely touch. We actually forgot he was there as the day went on, he was so discreet.”
Joanne had a vision in mind when it came to her dress, and with the help of Steph at The Bridal Boutique in Peterculter, she found a gorgeous Madeline Gardner gown; however it wasn’t at all what she’d had in mind!
“I didn’t want a fussy gown with a veil or bling, but I came away with a gown and the longest veil ever!” laughs Joanne. “I felt amazing in it.”
The couple married in Belhelvie Church with the Reverend Manson Merchant marrying them there, which was really special for them. “I was christened in the same church and the Reverend is my dad’s friend,” says Joanne.
The Marriot Hotel were also amazing on the day, and catered for the guests perfectly. “I was running behind because of what had happened but they managed to keep everything running smoothly,” Joanne tells us.
“The highlight of the day for me were the speeches,” says Joanne, “which were great. I got my dad’s best friend to read his speech which was really emotional, then Fraser made his, and his best men finished with theirs which took 20 minutes!
They even used projectors and any secret Fraser had got told!” she laughs. Another talking point was a complete surprise for the couple, which was arranged by Joanne’s dad; a group of amazing singing waiters, who got the guests up on their feet around the tables and singing along too!
After the big day, the newlyweds went on a fabulous Trailfinders honeymoon: New York, then a cruise around the Caribbean ending with five nights in Barbados.
Not only did they come home relaxed and refreshed, but they brought some lovely news too.
“We found out on honeymoon that I was pregnant,” smiles Joanne. “Our first baby will be here on 2nd July this year.”
