Designer and creative director Andrea Hawkes, the queen of chic, elegant bridalwear, shares all about her eponymous label (which has landed in Scotland!)
How did you get into bridalwear design – what’s your story?
During my fashion degree I worked in a bridalwear store part-time, and discovered a passion for working with brides to find their dress.
After finishing my degree this led to working for a number of leading British wedding dress designers in client managing roles, and the experience I gained gave me the perfect platform to start my own label.
What do you love about designing wedding dresses?
I love the whole process, from beginning new collections to working with brides to create their vision.
Our skilled production team gives me the capability to work with brides individually to create the perfect dress.
I love fabrics – we only work with 100% natural silks and we invest a lot of time in sourcing the right fabrics for our collections each year, giving our brides the best quality.
The dress can only be perfect if the cut, fit and fabric are right.
Where do you find design inspiration?
Inspiration often comes from working with our brides; seeing how previous collection pieces work on the body, which fabrics work well and what brides are looking for.
I also find inspiration from fabrics – finding the fabric first can often lead to a design – and keep a close eye on high-end couture fashion, too.
‘Aurelia’ from the Reflection Collection
Have you a favourite dress you’ve designed?
One of my all-time favourites is ‘Aurelia’ from our 2019 collection (pictured above).
It has really met our aim of designing dresses that offer the finished look.
Where previously we worked to create very simplistic, beautiful dresses with a detailed layer, such as a lace top or a beaded layer, ‘Aurelia’ combines this style with a beautiful silk and French lace dress in one piece.
Tell us about the new collection…
‘Reflection’ is a development of the Andrea Hawkes simplistic contemporary design, using new lace and beading designs to create finished looks, alongside beautiful plain silk dresses, both in soft and structured silhouettes.
Who is the Andrea Hawkes bride?
She is understated, classic, strong, confident and timeless.
Our brides are often career women, with an appreciation for the quality of our gowns and fabrics, who are looking for a timeless dress that fits with their everyday style, but is tailored to fit them perfectly.
What would you be doing if you weren’t a bridalwear designer?
I love cooking, so something to do with good food and a relaxed but classy restaurant.
What’s next for Andrea Hawkes?
Our 2020 collection is in the design stages. We will be introducing new embroidered lace designs with a modern floral approach, which are quite different to our geometric lace patterns of past collections.
The focus is on individuality and the importance of that for every bride and her dress.
We will be introducing overskirts as a new design feature for us, using beautiful light laces and silk tulle designs.
