There’s something magical about a winter wedding, isn’t there? A blanket of snow; a dusting of frost; cosying up in your venue with your guests in front of a roaring log fire.
It’s hardly surprising that in recent years there’s been a rise in the number of couples opting for an autumn or winter wedding.
Newlyweds Lauren and David Ferguson were one such couple. They tied the knot last December at Achnagairn Castle after falling in love with its “incredible” ballroom and the fact that they could have all their friends and family staying for the weekend at the exclusive-use venue.
“We loved the rustic winter look, you really can’t beat wedding photos set in a winter wonderland,” says Lauren, who married David in a humanist ceremony.
“Overall the wedding was a blur; I don’t think we’ve ever laughed and smiled and danced so much! There was so much going on “ we couldn’t have done it without the professionals at Achnagairn organising everyone on the day.”
HOW TO PLAN A WINTER WEDDING ON A BUDGET
One of the benefits of tying the knot in winter is that it can often be more affordable than a spring or summer wedding. If you’ve always harboured a dream of tying the knot in a Scottish castle but felt like it’d be too much of a stretch for your budget, this is the best time of year to do it.
And if you take advantage of Achnagairn Castle’s Affordable Winter Wonderland Wedding (AWWW) offer, you could make a huge saving.
As part of their 10 year anniversary celebrations, Achnagairn Castle is offering £1,000 off the cost of hiring the castle for two nights to the first five couples who book a wedding to take place there between 10th January and 21st March 2019.
With rates starting from £5,000 (+VAT) for full weekend hire, you could be knocking 20% off the cost of your wedding!
In addition to getting £1,000 off the cost of venue hire, the first five couples to take advantage of this offer will receive 10% off their food bill, complimentary mulled wine on arrival for all guests staying at the castle, log fires in the castle’s reception rooms and romantic candles to create the perfect ambience for your wedding.
You can find out more about how to claim this offer here, but be quick if you want to be among the first five to book!
IDEAS FOR A WINTER WEDDING THEME
There are so many easy ways to create cosy winter vibes.
For your colour scheme, consider deep claret or burgundy juxtaposed with warm metallics (rose gold is still popular, while regular gold is on-trend for the year ahead). Use candles in your centrepieces and ceremony room to add to that warmth.
This is a time of year when hearty food is really appreciated, so bear that in mind when selecting your menu. You can really have fun with your drinks and canapés, too; how about a hot chocolate and s’mores station, and having hot cider and mulled wine served at the bar?
For table settings, spray paint pine cones (and sprinkle with festive glitter) and give mini snow globes as wedding favours.

Oh, and if you want to have your photos taken outside, have a cover-up to hand, whether it’s a faux fur jacket or a cosy bridal jumper. A pair of wedding wellies will also prove useful if it snows!
