We can tell you lots about wedding photography, but there are
some aspects that are difficult to appreciate until you actually
experience it for yourself. Here, some recent brides tell us how they
feel about their photography post-big day
Although the vast majority of couples are over the moon with their wedding albums, many people regret missing one or two photos that they simply didn't think about at the time. Perhaps omitting to get a shot of the bride and her brother, or one of the groom's grandad, or of all the people from work. Colleen says she regrets not having a photo of her hubby and bridesmaids together: "Mainly because they love him nearly as much as I do!" she laughs. Some brides said they wished the photographer had taken more detail shots. Others regretted not having a pic of each group of guests arriving, so that they had at least one photo of everyone who attended.
SPLASH THE CASH
Cassandra says she regrets not spending much money on her photographer; one reason is there were no decent photos of her and her husband together. "Our photographer was a friend of the family's and we did him a favour by giving him the job, we thought he could use the experience. Unfortunately he had only done one wedding before ours - and it shows. I would also advise that you make a list of all the shots you want, as you are too busy on the day to think about it." Jenny also says she wishes she'd spent more time putting a comprehensive list of shots together: "We compiled our list just a few days before the wedding but at that point we had so many other things going on that we probably didn't spend long thinking it through. "When we saw the proof book we loved it, but it was immediately obvious to me that we'd missed a couple of photos I would really have liked. There is only one photo of me and Mum, and it's at a distance so it's not the best."
STYLE FACTOR
Maybe it's just human nature to always want more, as some couples wish they had had more relaxed photos taken, whereas brides, like Claire, regret not having more formal shots. "I wish I had had some more taken with my family and my bridesmaids," she says. "Also I wish our photographer had taken more pictures of the details, and close-up shots of us and other people chatting at the wedding, although I suppose I should have mentioned that to her!" With the benefit of hindsight, some couples might have gone for a different style of photography. "We were positive we wanted reportage as we both hate posing for photos," says Rhona. "And our photographer was brilliant - but it does have its downsides as believe it or not I don't have a proper picture of me and my bridesmaids."
SPEND TIME
All the couples we speak to after their weddings stress the importance of the photography, and many regret not booking the photographer for a longer portion of the day. As Sylvia says, "I loved my photos and think that of all the areas to think about and plan carefully, photography really has to be right up there. Videos and photos are the only ways to have a lasting visual memory of the day. Obviously we will never forget the wedding but the photos are so important in helping you remember the day clearly."
