THE BIPP WINNER in the wedding category this year was Edinburgh based photographer Ewan Barry, of Images of Morningside. Ewan always had an interest in photography, but it wasn't until 2000 that he decided it was the career for him: "I began my studies just in time to learn the old-fashioned way," he says, "shooting on film and printing colour as well as black and white by hand."
2004 was a busy year for Ewan; as well as graduating from the capital's Stevenson College, he also exhibited a selection of images at the Association Of Photographers Gallery in London, reaching the final stages of the AOP's competition. Not to mention gaining an Associateship with the British Institute of Professional Photography and getting himself a job at Images of Morningside, where he still works.
As well as winning the BIPP Scotland's 2008 'Wedding Photographer of the Year' award, Ewan has been gathering various other prestigious accolades since then. He is currently working on a series of photographs showing people at work and at home in the Morningside/Bruntsfield area, and says any volunteers are welcome to get in touch! Ewan says it was great to win the wedding category and add another trophy to Images Of Morningside's collection. "It's also fantastic that the awards are being given so much publicity now, through The SWD and the BIPP," he adds. "This gives us all an extra incentive to improve our photography and enter the competitions, which is a good thing for potential customers as well."
